ÑÇÖÞ91ÊÓƵ applauds provincial literacy initiative
The ÑÇÖÞ91ÊÓƵ (LRSD) applauds the Province of Manitoba's decision to implement universal screening in kindergarten to Grade 4 classrooms starting September 2026. This initiative aligns with LRSD's commitment to early identification and support for students' literacy development laid out in Strategic Action 2.3 from the LRSD Multi-Year Strategic Plan 2023-2027.
In a recent , Assistant Superintendent Ron Cadez highlighted the importance of universal early literacy screening. He said one reason early identification is crucial is that children who find reading challenging often face higher rates of self-esteem and mental health issues compared to their peers.
LRSD has been an early adopter of evidence-based tools such as the Comprehensive Test of Phonological Processing 2nd Edition (CTOPP-2) and Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (DIBELS), which have been instrumental in efforts to improve student outcomes since 2021.
We look forward to continuing to work alongside the Province of Manitoba to ensure all students get the care and attention they need.
